Founded in 2001 by President and Principal Investigator, John G. Sonnenberg, Ph.D., Uptown Research Institute (URI) is a leading clinical research site specializing in the study and treatment of mental health disorders. URI has partnered with the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies as well as small biotech start-ups to conduct inpatient and outpatient clinical trials evaluating new and emerging treatments. URI conducts research of the highest quality, bringing residents of Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood and the greater Chicagoland community innovative treatments and compassionate care.

URI has an excellent track record of meeting and exceeding enrollment goals. With a convenient, street-level location in a densely populated area, walk-ins are a key source of study subjects. URI has a large patient database and referral relationships with psychiatric hospitals, community clinics, nursing homes, and more. URI’s full-time Recruitment Specialist has decades of experience in the field.

URI’s private, 24-hour Clinical Research Unit (CRU) has hosted studies across neuroscience indications, including Phases I-III, PK, bioequivalence, and healthy volunteers. Adjacent to URI’s outpatient center, the 2,000 sq. ft. CRU includes a nurses station (with crash cart), community room, dining room, quiet room, bathroom with shower, laundry room, and active 8 beds with an expanded capacity to 12. Subjects have access to a private smoking patio. Participants in the CRU are cared for by dedicated URI staff, under the directorship of physicians Board Certified in Psychiatry and Family Medicine.
